What Are We Learning?

As we begin each new math topic in class, I will be posting a letter to families that explains which standards we are learning, example problems, and ideas for ways to support the standard(s) at home with a real-world connection problem. These letters are also sent home as a hard copy with your child.

During our first unit of study in Reading, Students will reflect on their previous reading habits, set new goals for the Fourth Grade year and explore various strategies to track their ideas within their books. Students will also participate in Book Buzzes with classmates to share their favorite texts and assist them in gathering lists of authors, genres and series that they want to read this year.

In Writing, Students will be learning how to utilize the story arc for planning, drafting, and revising.  Students will be asked to bring their personal life events to life while writing several Personal Narratives. Students will explore the importance of orienting their readers, managing a sequence of events, and using precise words/details to convey their experiences. Throughout this unit of writing, Students will be given several opportunities to share their writing with their classmates to receive feedback on their writing and to share their life experiences with classmates.

Students will explore continents, oceans, various types of maps, and practice important map skill such as latitude and longitude during our first unit of study in Social Studies. Social Studies and Science will occur on a rotating schedule. We will complete our first unit of Social Studies during the month of September and we will begin our first Science in late September/early October.
